Dayana Aguilar, Maria Vazquez Killed in Phoenix Wrong-Way Accident
PHOENIX, AZ (November 21, 2024) — 23-year-old Maria Delrefugio Vazquez, of Glendale, and 29-year-old Dayana Viola Aguilar died in a crash on Thursday, November 7.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the incident occurred at about 2:00 a.m. on the 17 Freeway near Indian School Road.
DPS said traffic cameras captured a wrong-way Prius driven by Vazquez traveling south in the northbound lanes of the freeway. Then it kept moving until Grant Street, where it collided head-on with a black Camry.
Vazquez sustained fatal injuries in the collision and died at the scene.
Meanwhile, paramedics brought the male driver and female passenger inside the Camry to the hospital with critical injuries. Authorities later confirmed the passenger in the Camry died. They released her identity on Friday as Aguilar.
Officials closed the northbound lanes and reopened it at around 5:00 a.m.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the incident.
