Luciano Tapia Arrested after Fatal Bicycle Hit-and-Run Accident in Abilene

 
ABILENE, TX (March 22, 2024) — Authorities arrested 28-year-old Luciano Tapia of Abilene after a hit-and-run on Wednesday, March 13.
 
According to Abilene police, officers received reports of a bicycle accident in the 1600 block of South 14th Street at about 10:40 p.m.
 
APD said the bicycle rider traveled west on 14th Street. Then a vehicle driven by Tapia struck him and left the scene.
 
When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered a 41-year-old unconscious male lying on the shoulder on the north side of the street. They also found the bike he rode a short distance away on the road.
 
Officials pronounced the man dead at the scene. His identity is not yet available pending next of kin notification.
 
Police identified the vehicle through a piece that fell off during the incident. Officers later found the driver and the vehicle in a south Abilene neighborhood the same evening.
 
Authorities then arrested Tapia and charged him with second-degree felony accident involving death. Then they transported him to Taylor County Jail.
 
Officials continue to investigate the crash.
