SEQUIM, WA (October 23, 2024) — 66-year-old Mukiltea Lawrence Scherer sustained injuries in a hit-and-run on Tuesday, October 8.
 
According to the Washington State Patrol, the incident occurred on Highway 101, near Simdars Road at about 11:05 p.m.
 
Police said an off-duty tow truck driver called them. The driver reported that Scherer and another man fought on the roadway in the westbound lanes of Highway 101.
 
Then a white truck hit Scherer, who was hunched over to pick up a clamming shovel. The vehicle traveled at a high rate of speed and continued westbound after hitting Scherer.
 
Responding officers performed CPR until firefighters and paramedics arrived. Then the medics stabilized Scherer and airlifted him to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
 
WSP said officers had not seen the man who reportedly fought with Scherer. They believe he drove off after the incident.
 
On Wednesday morning, the truck driver surrendered to the Clallam County Courthouse. He currently faces felony hit-and-run charges.
