Man Arrested, Karl Ortiz Identified in Fatal Auburn Head-On Crash

 
AUBURN, WA (May 15, 2023) – Officers identified 27-year-old Karl Ortiz of Gig Harbor who died in a wrong-way crash on Highway 18 on May 12.
 
According to the Washington State Patrol, the collision happened at 312th Way just before midnight. Based on a report, a driver was going the wrong-way in the eastbound side of the highway prior to the crash.
 
Subsequently, the vehicle struck Ortiz’s car head-on, causing the victim’s car to strike a barrier and come to rest in a lane. During the crash, a third vehicle drove over debris and punctured a tire.
 
As a result, Ortiz suffered grave injuries and died at the scene.
 
Police arrested the wrong-way driver, a 38-year-old Bellevue man, on suspicion of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence.
