Karen Maldonado Dies in Mesa Car Crash on Southern Avenue
MESA, AZ (August 29, 2023) — 23-year-old Karen Maldonado died in a multi-vehicle accident on Southern Avenue on Wednesday, August 23.
According to the Mesa Police Department, a Ford pickup truck driver traveled at a high rate of speed on Southern Avenue. Then he struck the curb near Stapley Drive.
After that, the suspect sideswiped a silver Chevy and Maldonado in a silver Mazda sedan who stopped for a red light at Stapley Drive. The impact pushed Maldonado’s car into the intersection.
As a result, both she and the suspect crashed into a Mesa Public Schools school bus and several other vehicles. Reports said at least eight vehicles were part of the chain-reaction crash.
Maldonado suffered fatal injuries and paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene. Friends made a GoFundMe page to help her bereaved loved ones.
A boy was on the bus. However, he was not injured.
Emergency transported the pickup truck driver to the hospital. His condition is not released. Investigators said he was not under the influence. However, there may be possible pending charges.
