Joleen Weatherly, Joseph Summa Fatally Injured after Odessa Airplane Crash
ODESSA, TX (September 2, 2024) — Joseph Vincent Summa and Joleen Cavaretta Weatherly died in a plane crash on Tuesday, August 20.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, upon receiving reports of the incident, they responded to the 6800 block of Alderfer Avenue at around 7:00 a.m.
Witnesses said the plane had a hard time gaining altitude after taking off from an Odessa airport. Then it hit a power line and continued southbound where it crashed into a private alley. It also struck several homes and sheds.
Both people inside the plane died. The Texas DPS identified the pilot of the Cessna Citation business jet as 48-year-old Joseph Vincent Summa, of the Houston suburb of Bellaire. They also released the name of his passenger — 49-year-old Joleen Cavaretta Weatherly, of Orange.
Odessa Fire Rescue Chief Jason Cotton said a couple of mobile homes and some outbuildings in backyards in the area caught fire after the crash.
Paramedics rescued a woman from one of the burning mobile homes. After that, they transported her to a hospital for treatment of injuries.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board handle the ongoing investigation.
