WAPATO, WA (October 7, 2024) — A 32-year-old Wapato man identified as Joe T. Sandoval died in a pedestrian accident on Saturday, September 21.
 
According to the Washington State Patrol, the accident occurred on Highway 97, approximately 2 miles north of Wapato, at about 10:30 p.m.
 
WSP said Sandoval walked north on Highway 97. Then, a 2007 Pontiac moving north went off the roadway and struck him.
 
Responding officers pronounced Sandoval dead at the scene. Yakima County Chief Deputy Coroner Marshall Slight later said Sandoval died from blunt-force trauma.
 
Meanwhile, the driver of the Pontiac was not hurt by the incident. Authorities identified him as 38-year-old Aaron L. Reeves from Yakima.
 
Troopers said Reeves wore a seatbelt. In addition, they said impairment was not a factor in the accident.
