James Ball Dead, Leonard Campbell and Claudio Bustillo-Diaz Hurt in Head-On Crash

 
MOORE COUNTY, TX (January 28, 2025) — A 65-year-old man, James Ball of Stratford, died in a head-on accident on Monday, January 20.
 
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a head-on crash occurred at around 12:53 p.m. on FM 281, approximately 4.5 miles west of Etter.
 
Texas DPS said Ball drove a 2018 Toyota Tundra eastbound on FM 28. At the same time, 36-year-old Leonard Campbell, of Perryton, drove a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado westbound. Claudio Bustillo-Diaz, a 44-year-old Perryton resident, was a passenger in Campbell’s vehicle.
 
Investigators revealed that snowy weather conditions and accumulated snow on the roadway contributed to the crash. Ball reportedly traveled at an unsafe speed for the conditions. Then his vehicle veered into the westbound lane. After that, he collided head-on with Campbell’s truck.
 
Ball, who did not wear a seatbelt, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
 
Paramedics brought Campbell and Bustillo-Diaz to Memorial Hospital in Dumas. Campbell sustained minor injuries, while Bustillo-Diaz suffered serious injuries. Both of them wore seatbelts.
 
The Texas DPS continues to investigate the incident.
