India Watson Dead, Rene Camarillo Arrested in Police Pursuit Accident on Martin Street
SAN ANTONIO, TX (January 30, 2024) — A woman identified as 47-year-old India F. Watson died during a police pursuit crash on Friday, January 26.
According to San Antonio bike officers, they responded to an aggravated robbery on East Martin Street at around 8:00 p.m.
Police said two suspects in dark hoodies with a gun approached a man and woman. The suspects took the woman’s purse and keys. After that, they drove away in the victim’s vehicle.
Officers tracked the stolen vehicle using GPS. They tried to stop the driver before the driver fled and got away.
A few hours later, at about 10:30 p.m., officers located the car again and tried to pull over the driver. However, the driver fled again, and the pursuit began.
During the high-speed police chase, one of the patrol cars struck Watson, who was walking in the street. The officers stopped to administer aid. However, Watson succumbed to sustained injuries and died at the scene.
Authorities captured a suspect at a nearby location after abandoning the vehicle and fleeing on foot.
Police said one of the suspects, 17-year-old Rene Camarillo, faces charges of murder, aggravated robbery, and evading arrest. The murder charge is due to Camarillo’s alleged action that led to the pedestrian’s fatality.
