Gary Burnside Killed in Phoenix Accident on Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway
PHOENIX, AZ (March 7, 2024) — A man identified as 61-year-old Gary Burnside of Phoenix died in a crash on Monday, February 26.
According the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the fiery accident took place at about 10:30 a.m. on Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway near 40th Street.
Arizona DPS said that Burnside drove an SUV westbound in the eastbound lanes of the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway. Then he side-swiped a minivan and kept going. After that, it eventually collided with a semi-truck.
Authorities reported that Burnside died at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash.
Footage showed that the semi-truck became completely engulfed in flames. Several firefighters responded to the scene and extinguished the fire.
Another commercial truck drove also sustained damages after hitting the debris from the scene.
The driver of the semi-truck, minivan, and commercial truck were not hurt.
Arizona DPS reopened the shut eastbound lanes near 24th Street at 2:15 p.m.
Officials continue to investigate the crash.
