LONG BEACH, CA (August 9, 2022) — 7-year-old Gabriel Garate died in a pedestrian crash at the intersection of Lakewood Boulevard and 23rd Street on Tuesday afternoon, July 26.

The fatal incident occurred at around 5:25 p.m., according to the Long Beach Police Department. It involved a 2005 Dodge Ram pickup truck, driven by 57-year-old James Barnes of Desert Hot Springs.

Initial investigation indicated that Garate and his father were traveling across Lakewood Boulevard eastbound on 23rd Street. The two used a marked crossway and were deemed in the right-of-way, but the Dodge Ram did not yield to the pedestrians.

As a result, the pickup truck hit Garate. Officials later found him unconscious on the road with critical injuries.

However, authorities would later pronounce the young male victim dead on the scene.

Meanwhile, Barnes stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Officials then conducted an arrest as he faced charges of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.

On early Wednesday morning, Barnes was released on $50,000 bond, as per the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Police disclosed that alcohol, drugs, and distracted driving did not appear as factors in the incident.

No further information is available at this time as the case remains under investigation.
