George Alvarez Runs Red Light, Hits People at Brownsville Bus Stop

 
BROWNSVILLE, TX (May 9, 2023) – Brownsville police confirmed that eight people died when a car ran into a group of people at a bus stop near the Bishop Enrique San Pedro Ozanam Center on May 6.
 
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the collision happened near Minnesota Road and North Bernal Road around 8:30 AM. Based on a report, a gray Land Range Rover ran a light near the shelter.
 
Subsequently, the vehicle traveled about a 100 feet and crashed through a crowd of 18 people who were at the bus stop.
 
The city bus stop is not marked and people were sitting along the curb while waiting.
 
As a result, eight people suffered grave injuries and died in the incident. Officers said most of the victims were Venezuelan men.
 
The accident also significantly injured 10 other people.
 
The driver, George Alvarez, was detained and received medical attention. The 34-year-old is currently being held at the Brownsville city jail.
 
Police Chief Felix Sauceda said Alvarez was charged with eight counts of manslaughter and 10 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to the associated press.
 
Additionally, officials are awaiting the results of a toxicology report.
