Firefighters Killed in Dalhart Car Crash Involving Truck Tractor on U.S. 54

 
DALHART, TX (October 18, 2022) – Fire Chief Curtis Brown and Firefighter Brendan Torres died in a head-on crash on U.S. 54 on Tuesday, October 4.

The Dalhart Volunteer Fire Department already confirmed that 19-year-old Torres and 51-year-old Fire Chief Brown were on their way back from a call when the accident happened.

Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers said the accident occurred northeast of Dalhart, about 70 miles northwest of Amarillo. They received a call at 8:40 p.m. after a Dalhart Volunteer Fire Department vehicle crashed into a truck tractor.

The truck was heading northeast towing a semi-tractor while the Chevrolet drove southwest on Highway 54. DPS believed that the tractor-trailer attempted to overtake an unknown vehicle when it hit the oncoming Chevrolet head-on.

Both Brown and Torres died at the scene, police said.

The driver of the truck tractor sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities will continue to investigate this case. No other information is known at this time.
