Clay Burt and Phillip Araujo Killed in Train Accident on Highway 285 and Cedar Street

 
PECOS, TX (January 3, 2024) — Union Pacific employees Clay Burt and Phillip Araujo died in a train accident on Wednesday, December 18.
 
Pecos City Manager Charles Lino said the incident happened at around 5:00 p.m. on Highway 285 and Cedar Street. He said a northbound truck tractor-low boy trailer combination carrying the base of a wind turbine tried to cross the railroad tracks at Highway 285.
 
Then for reasons under investigation, the truck tractor-trailer combination was unable to go over the tracks. After that, the train struck a tractor-trailer. It then caused the train to derail, which ultimately led to the train hitting the Chamber of Commerce building.
 
According to Pecos Chief of Police Lisa Tarango, two men died following the accident. They identified them as 63-year-old Clay Burt, of Sweetwater, and 47-year-old Phillip Araujo, of Del Rio.
 
Three other victims sustained injuries. First responders transported them to Reeves Regional Health for treatment of minor injuries. Officials have not yet revealed if those injured were also Union Pacific employees.
 
Officials contained potentially hazardous materials, including lithium-ion batteries and leaked fuel, after the incident.
 
The National Transportation Safety Board assisted by SMART-TD handles the ongoing investigation.
