Billy Wells Jr. Killed and Dillon Smith Hospitalized after Wrong-Way Woodland Accident

 
WOODLAND, WA (May 29, 2024) — An Estacada man identified as 62-year-old Billy L. Wells Jr. died in a wrong-way crash on Thursday, May 16.
 
According to Washington State Patrol, the wrong-way crash took place on the northbound 5 Freeway, at milepost 26 at around 8:20 p.m.
 
WSP said an investigation determined a silver Mercedes driven by Wells Jr. traveled southbound in the northbound lanes. After that, it struck head-on a dark green Chevrolet Suburban.
 
Officers said Wells Jr. died at the scene.
 
Emergency responders brought the driver of the Chevrolet to an area hospital for treatment of unknown injuries. They later identified him as 28-year-old Dillon G. Smith.
 
According to WSP, authorities determined the cause of the accident as a wrong-way impaired driver.
 
WSP said they charged Smith with driving under the influence.
 
Washington State Department of Transportation said they closed both directions of the highway near milepost 26 and across from Martin Island. After that, they reopened the southbound lanes by 9:45 p.m. and the southbound lanes by 11:00 p.m.
