Meredith Portillo, Two Others Dead after Wrong-Way Elmendorf Accident

 
ELMENDORF, TX (August 6, 2024) — Bexar County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Meredith Portillo, 20, died in a wrong-way accident on Sunday, July 21.
 
The fatal crash involving two vehicles took place on 37 Freeway and Donop Road in South Bexar County.
 
According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, a Ford F-15 traveled northbound in the southbound lanes of 37 Freeway at Loop 1604. Then it crashed into a Ford Mustang occupied by Deputy Portillo, who was off duty, and two others.
 
Both Deputy Portillo and one of her passengers died on impact. Meanwhile, another passenger in her car sustained injuries.
 
The suspected wrong-way driver also died in the crash, said the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.
 
Deputy Portillo started her law enforcement career at 19 years old with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office in September 2023. She graduated from the detention academy in January this year. She was at the start of her career with less than a year on the job.
