ROBSTOWN, TX (February 13, 2024) — A 63-year-old man, Artemio Calles Torres, died in a crash while rescuing his dogs on Monday, February 6.
 
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash happened at about 7:20 p.m. on FM 624 and FM 666 on Monday, February 6.
 
Texas DPS Public Information Sgt. Harold Mallory said Torres tried to pick up his dog from the westbound lane of the road. Then a Jeep Gladiator struck him.
 
DPS stated that the driver of the Jeep did attempt to stop and swerved to avoid Torres. However, he was unsuccessful. The driver and other motorists stopped at the scene to aid Torres and called the authorities.
 
When EMS officers arrived at the area, they pronounced Torres dead.
