9-Year-Old Trapped Under Rear Axle in Vancouver School Bus Crash on 10th Street and Ellsworth Road
VANCOUVER, WA (April 2, 2024) — A 9-year-old Ellsworth Elementary School student was hurt in a bus crash on Tuesday, March 26.
The incident occurred on at Southwest 10th Street and Southeast Ellsworth Road at around 7:20 a.m.
Vancouver Police Department said the bus made a right turn onto 10th Street from Ellsworth Road. At the same time, the student on the bike traveled north on the sidewalk. Then the bike crossed Southeast 10th Street and eventually struck the right side of the school bus.
When Vancouver Fire arrived at the area, they found a student entangled in his bicycle under the rear axle of the bus.
Firefighters then used wood and a ladder truck to lift the bus to free the child. After that, they brought the child to a Portland area pediatric hospital where he received treatment for leg injuries.
One student passenger was on the bus with the driver when the incident happened. Both of them were not hurt.
Police stated the bus driver was not at fault and there were no citations.
