Eleanore Johnson Struck and Killed by Suspected DUI Driver Carlos Pina in Tucson
TUCSON, AZ (December 1, 2024) – The Tucson Police Department identified 83-year-old Eleanore Johnson who died in a pedestrian accident on Alvernon Way on November 8.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the collision happened near Fraedrich Drive. Based on a report, Johnson was in an implied crosswalk when she was hit by a pickup truck traveling in the curb lane.
Police said the vehicle had left the scene and Johnson for about 10 minutes.
As a result, Johnson suffered grave injuries in the incident. Tucson Fire personnel pronounced her dead at the scene.
TPD detectives said the vehicle then returned. They later identified the passenger, 38-year-old Carlos V. Pina, as the driver at the time of the collision. An impairment test indicated the suspect had been driving under the influence.
Officers charged Pina with manslaughter, leaving the scene of a fatal collision and child abuse. They also charged the passenger who swapped seats with hindering prosecution.
As of now, an investigation into the case is ongoing. In addition, no other details are available.
