Samantha Alwan and Another Dead after Fiery Wrong-Way Accident on 27 Freeway

 
ABERNATHY, TX (December 23, 2024) — A Plainview firefighter, Samantha Alwan, died in an accident on Sunday, December 15.
 
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the incident occurred at around 6:05 a.m. on 27 Freeway near County Road 5100.
 
Investigators believe a 2014 Ford Escape moved south in the northbound lanes of 27 Freeway. Then it crashed head-on with a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Alwan traveling in the left northbound lane.
 
The Ford caught fire. Emergency responders pronounced Alwan and the other driver dead at the scene. There were no other occupants in either vehicle.
 
The identity of the Ford driver was not immediately available because the vehicle and the driver became engulfed in flames.
 
Texas DPS said Alwan wore a seatbelt. It was unclear if the other driver also wore their seatbelt.
 
Troopers continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
