Cocopah Tribe Councilman Irwin Twist Identified in Fatal Accident in Yuma County
YUMA COUNTY, AZ (July 16, 2024) – The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office identified 75-year-old Cocopah Tribe councilman Irwin Twist who died in a DUI accident on Avenue C on June 21.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the collision happened at County 14th Street. Based on a report, a driver sped through a stop at the intersection during the crash.
Subsequently, the vehicle crashed into a truck. Officials said Twist was a passenger in the car.
As a result, Twist suffered grave injuries and died in the incident. Twist served on the Cocopah Council for nearly a decade as an army veteran. He was instrumental in bringing veteran programs to the Cocopah Reservation.
Emergency crews transported the driver and another passenger in the car to the hospital for treatment of injuries.
Officials said the driver was impaired at the time of the crash.
As of now, an investigation into the case is ongoing. In addition, no other details are available.
