18-Year-Old Jaidy Alcala, 17-Year-Old Leila Arias Killed in UTV Accident on Rio Grande Care Road [Edinburg, TX]

Leila Arias and Jaidy Alcala Identified in Fatal Edinburg Accident

 
EDINBURG, TX (December 11, 2023) – The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office identified 18-year-old Jaidy Alcala and 17-year-old Leila Elizabeth Arias who died in a UTV accident on Rio Grande Care Road on November 25.
 
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, both girls were occupants of a UTV traveling on the road at the time of the crash.
 
The sheriff’s office said Arias was the one driving the UTV. Due to unknown reasons, the UTV rolled off a levee and into a canal along Rio Grande Care Road. The UTV was submerged underwater, trapping the girls inside the vehicle.
As a result, Alcala and Arias suffered grave injuries and died in the incident. Alcala and Arias attended Edinburg North High School.
 
Two younger girls, ages 12 and 15, went to get help at a nearby home. Crews later took them to Monte Cristo Freestanding ER for minor injuries.
 
As of now, the case remains under investigation. In addition, no other details are available.
