14-Year-Old Samantha Bursum Killed, Loretta Wills and Isaac Mendoza Injured in Crash on 20 Freeway [Ward County, TX]

Teen Samantha Bursum Identified in Fatal Crash on 20 Freeway in Ward County

 
WARD COUNTY, TX (March 12, 2024) – Officials identified 14-year-old Samantha Bursum who died in a crash on 20 Freeway on March 1.
 
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the collision happened on mile post 73 near Pecos shortly after 9:30 PM. Based on a report, Bursum – a Las Cruces High School student – was traveling to a club-sponsored volleyball tournament in Midland.
 
She was with 50-year-old Loretta Keleher Wills in a 2016 Toyota SUV. At that point, a disabled 2008 Cadillac from a previous crash had no lights and was blocking both lanes of the freeway. Wills did not see the Cadillac and struck it.
 
As a result, Bursum suffered grave injuries and died in the incident.
 
Crews transported Wills to Ward Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Cadillac, 25-year-old Isaac Mendoza also sustained serious injuries.
 
As of now, the officers are investigating the crash. In addition, no other details are available.
