14-Year-Old Alexis Lighthizer Identified in Fatal Hayden Crash

HAYDEN, CO (February 27, 2023) – The Routt County Coroner’s Office identified 14-year-old Alexis Lighthizer as the victim who died in a crash on Highway 40 on February 21.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, the collision happened near mile marker 100. Based on a report, Lighthizer was an occupant of a westbound 1986 Ford F250 that crossed over into the eastbound lane for an unknown reason.

Subsequently, it collided head-on with an eastbound 2014 GMC Sierra, causing it to spin out before it ended up facing northeast in the south ditch of the highway. Then, a 2002 Subaru Outback hit the left side of the GMC Sierra.

As a result, Lighthizer died in the incident.

A 54-year-old Hayden man in the Ford suffered life-threatening injuries. The Subaru occupants, a 64-year-old woman from Hayden and a 16-year-old boy from Craig, had moderate injuries.

Officials did not believe excessive speed played a factor in the crash.

As of now, an investigation into the case is ongoing.
