REAL ID Driver’s License

Effective May 7, 2025, all Californian drivers will need either a REAL ID driver’s license, U.S. passport, or military ID to board a domestic flight in the United States. Congress passed the REAL ID Act in 2005 to establish minimum security standards to improve security and combat fraud. Read on to learn the requirements for a REAL ID and how to apply for one.

What Is a California REAL ID?

The California REAL ID is a federally compliant driver’s license or identification card issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). It is available to both drivers and non-drivers and can be used as an official form of identification. Getting a REAL ID card is optional. However, you will need a REAL ID if you plan to board a domestic flight, visit a federal facility, or access a military base.

Unlike a standard California driver’s license, the REAL ID issued in California contains a special marking — a bear and a star in the top right corner

What Is a Federal Non-Compliant Card?

A federal non-compliant card is a driver’s license or identification card that is not acceptable for official use by federal agencies. It will have the text “Federal Limits Apply” in the upper right corner.

A California driver’s license that displays the words “Federal Limits Apply” will still allow you to drive, apply for or receive federal benefits, vote or register to vote, receive life-saving services, visit hospitals, and enter certain federal facilities like post offices. However, you will not be able to board a domestic flight with a federal non-compliant card.

Do Minors Need a REAL ID to Fly Domestically?

Do You Need a REAL ID if You Have a U.S. Passport?

However, after the deadline, a standard California driver’s license will no longer be sufficient for boarding domestic flights or accessing secure military bases and federal facilities.
