James Merrifield Identified in Fatal Hilmar Crash, Francisco Padilla Jr. Injured

 
HILMAR, CA (December 12, 2022) – The Merced County Sheriff’s Office identified 28-year-old James Merrifield as the victim who died in a crash on Lander Avenue on December 5.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened just north of American Avenue at about 5:40 PM. Based on a report, Merrifield had stopped his Honda Civic in the northbound lane of Lander.
 
He was waiting to make a left turn into his driveway prior to the crash. Due to unknown reasons, he was rear-ended by a tow truck. After that, a big rig hauling tanks of molasses also struck his Honda.
 
As a result, Merrifield died at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock.
 
The tow truck driver, 32-year-old Francisco Padilla Jr. of Turlock, suffered minor injuries. The big rig driver, 34-year-old Fabio Da Rocha of Denair, was not hurt.
 
At this point, the CHP continues to investigate the case. In addition, no other details are available.
