Dillon Mares Fatally Injured and Travis Smith Arrested after Phoenix Hit-and-Run

 
PHOENIX, AZ (September 25, 2024) — 28-year-old Dillon Mares died in a hit-and-run on Saturday, September 21.
 
According to the Phoenix Police, the crash occurred at the intersection of 16th Street and Camelback Road at about 12:30 a.m.
 
When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Mares with serious injuries. They later pronounced him dead at the scene.
 
Police said Mares drove a vehicle westbound through the intersection of 16th Street and Camelback Road. At the same time, the at-fault vehicle traveled southbound on 16th Street. Then it ran a red light at Camelback Road and hit the vehicle driven by Mares.
 
According to police, the at-fault driver fled on foot before the officers arrived.
 
On Sunday, 24-year-old Travis Smith called the Phoenix Police Department. He said that he was the driver involved in the collision. In addition, he admitted that he ran from the scene. After they interviewed him for the incident, medics brought him to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the incident.
 
Authorities later booked Smith into the Maricopa County jail. He faces several charges, including manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death or serious injury.
 
The investigation is still ongoing.
