Virgil Smith Dies after Car Crash on Highway 44 and Silver Bridge Road [Shasta, CA]

Virgil Smith Dead, Arthur Howatt and Lori Howatt Injured in Shasta Crash

 
SHASTA, CA (January 9, 2023) – 81-year-old Virgil Dempsey Smith of Troy, Montana passed away after a crash on Highway 44 and Silver Bridge Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened before 2:00 p.m. at the intersection near Palo Cedro.

Based on reports, an eastbound 2011 Jeep Cherokee was driving along Highway 44 when a northbound Toyota Solara appeared in front as it drove from Silver Bridge Road.

As a result, the Jeep crashed into the left side of the Toyota. Authorities identified the driver of the Toyota as Smith. Meanwhile, the occupants of the Jeep at the time were 71-year-old Arthur John Howatt and 66-year-old Lori Nadine Howatt. They are both Shingletown residents, police say.

Due to the impact, Smith suffered fatal injuries and later died.

Responders sent  the Jeep occupants to Mercy Medical Center with moderate injuries afterwards.
