Two Killed in Sun Valley Car Crash on 5 Freeway

SUN VALLEY, CA (March 1, 2023) – Two people were killed in a fiery car crash on 5 Freeway on Friday, February 17.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened shortly after 5:00 a.m. near the split with the 170 Freeway.

The victims’ white Dodge minivan was stalled in the No. 3 lane of the 5 Freeway after colliding with a blue Dodge. While the blue Dodge was able to pull over to the shoulder, the immobilized minivan was struck by a 2013 tractor-trailer.

The driver of the semi-truck told investigators that he did not have time to stop before hitting the van.

Two people, a 28-year-old man from Sunland and an 80-year-old woman from Panorama City, were died at the scene. However, their names have not been released.

The driver of the semi-truck was uninjured. However, CHP relayed that he was very upset about the crash.

The investigation is ongoing, but it appears neither drugs nor alcohol were factors.

We send our sincere condolences to the bereaved family and friends of the victim.
