Tamara Mathis Struck and Killed by on Highway 158 in Coke County
COKE COUNTY, TX (November 2, 2023) – Officials identified 35-year-old Tamara Jo Mathis of Winters who died in a crash on Highway 158 on October 19.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the collision happened the westbound shoulder of the highway. Based on a report, the victim was walking back to her vehicle with a container of gasoline after running out of gas.
At the same time, Barbra Ann Sparks of Robert Lee was driving a Blue Bird bus west on the same highway. When Sparks saw a vehicle coming from behind the bus, she moved over to the westbound shoulder of the road to let it pass. However, Sparks did not see Mathis until the bus had moved onto the shoulder and hit her.
As a result, Mathis suffered grave injuries and died at the scene.
Crews transported Sparks to Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo for treatment of minor injuries.
As of now, the case remains under investigation. In addition, no other details are available.
