Staci Sexton and Jacob Ray Dead, Woman Injured after Boat Accident on Lake Tyler

SMITH COUNTY, TX (August 29, 2024) — Two people identified as Staci Sexton and Jacob Ray died in a boat accident on Saturday, August 17.

According to Tyler Police PIO Andy Erbaugh, at around 6:00 a.m., a fishing boat coming around the corner of a canal on Lake Tyler struck a flat-bottom boat. There was a man on the fishing boat. Meanwhile, three people were on the flat-bottom boat.

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered 38-year-old Staci Sexton, of Whitehouse, unconscious and with life-threatening injuries. They also found an unidentified woman with non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities performed CPR on the injured woman. After that, they brought the woman and Sexton to nearby hospitals. Police later said medical personnel pronounced Sexton dead at the hospital.

The third person on the flat-bottom boat was a man they did not find after the crash. Tyler police, Smith County ESD personnel, and Longview authorities assisted in a search for the man. The Texas game wardens led the investigation.

By 12:00 p.m., the ESD reported that they had recovered the man, and the dive team found his body. Tyler police later identified him as 38-year-old Jacob Ray, of Troup.

Erbaugh said the man from the fishing boat remained at the scene and cooperated with the authorities.
