12-Year-Old Santiago Gaspar Dies in Suspected DUI Oceanside Crash
OCEANSIDE, CA (July 12, 2023) — Santiago Gaspar died while Edward Minot Jr. was arrested after a suspected DUI car crash on Surfrider Way and North Myers Street late Tuesday night, July 4.
The fatal incident involved a white Volkswagen GTI and a blue Nissan Altima, according to the Oceanside Police Department which received a report at around 11:00 p.m.
Officials stated that the Volkswagen driven by 20-year-Minot, a Marine with the 1st Maintenance Battalion, had no lights on as an OPD patrol vehicle attempted to pull him over.
Minot, who had two passengers, did not comply and decided to accelerate at a high rate of speed along Myers Street. The Volkswagen then slammed into the Altima, operated by a 27-year-old motorist who had 12-year-old Gaspar and his six-year-old brother aboard, that had traveled east on Surfrider Way.
The force of impact inflicted fatal injuries to Gaspar, who died at the scene.
Meanwhile, the driver of the Altima, Gaspar’s brother and the two passengers of the Volkswagen suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Respondents rendered aid and transported the patients to a local hospital.
Authorities later arrested Minot for suspicion of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter.
The case is still under investigation. Police are encouraging anyone with information to contact the OPD’s Traffic Collision Investigator David Paul at (760) 435-4431.
Our sympathies to the loved ones of Santiago Gaspar.
