Ruben Garcia Dead, Driver Arrested in DUI Accident on Highway 48 [Brownsville, TX]

Cameron County Deputy Ruben Garcia Killed after Brownsville DUI Accident

 
BROWNSVILLE, TX (October 17, 2024) — Cameron County Precinct 1 Deputy Constable Ruben Garcia died in an accident on Monday, September 30.
 
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash happened on Highway 48 near Marine Way Road at about 6:45 p.m.
 
The investigation determined a Cameron County Precinct 1 patrol unit occupied by Constable Garcia parked on Highway 48. He was in the patrol unit and was leaving after helping DPS with another accident scene at the location.
 
Then a white Chevrolet Silverado, occupied only by the driver, crashed into the rear of the patrol unit.
 
Paramedics transported Garcia to a hospital in Brownsville, where he died from sustained injuries.
 
DPS said the driver of the Chevrolet Silverado admitted being distracted while looking at his phone and driving. In addition, authorities suspect he was under the influence and they requested a search warrant for a blood draw.
 
Just after 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, DPS said paramedics brought the driver of the Chevrolet Silverado to Valley Baptist Hospital in Brownsville with minor injuries. He remains under custodial arrest.
 
After his medical release, they will charge him with Intoxication Manslaughter, Causing Death to a Police Officer.
