Fatal Fiery Accident on 5 Freeway near Joint Base Lewis-McChord Main Gate

LAKEWOOD, WA (March 18, 2024) — A man sustained fatal injuries and died in a fiery crash on 5 Freeway at about 3:10 a.m. on Saturday, March 9.

According to Washington State Patrol, an unknown model Chevrolet went into northbound 5 Freeway and lost control. After that, it struck the barrier on the right shoulder and crossed all the northbound lanes. Then it hit the barrier on the left shoulder.

The car eventually came to rest in the third lane before it burst into flames. The driver of the vehicle died. Officials only described him as a 23-year-old man from Denton, Texas.

His passenger, a 22-year-old man from Rancho California, suffered injuries. WSP spokesperson John Dattilo said he is expected to survive.

A second vehicle – a BMW X3 – crashed with the damaged vehicle due to a loss of visibility. The driver, a 54-year-old man from Bothell, was not hurt. However, the car sustained significant damage.

WSP determined the cause of the fatal collision as reckless driving. All parties involved wore seat belts, WSP added.

Officials closed the northbound lanes of 5 Freeway near milepost 120 and the Joint Base Lewis-McChord Main Gate for almost seven hours as crews investigated and cleared the scene. They reopened it at 9:44 a.m.
