Mary Haapala Dead, Joshua Degolier Detained after Gilbert Car Crashed into Senior Care Facility

 
GILBERT, AZ (January 14, 2025) — An 88-year-old woman, Mary Lillian Haapala, died in a car accident on Friday, January 10.
 
According to the Gilbert police, the accident occurred a little before 10:00 p.m. near the intersection of Lindsay Road and Guadalupe Road.
 
When officers responded to the scene, they discovered a vehicle had crashed into the American Orchards Senior Community building.
 
Authorities also found a woman they later identified as Haapala inside the building. She sustained fatal injuries due to the incident and they pronounced her dead at the scene.
 
Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle, 33-year-old Joshua Degolier, reportedly fled the area. Officers later found and arrested him. He faces several charges including second-degree murder.
 
Police believe impairment played a role in the accident.
 
The investigation of the crash remains underway.
