HOWARD COUNTY, TX (August 12, 2024) — 64-year-old Jose Gonzales from Ackerly died in a DUI accident on Thursday, July 25.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash took place on Highway 87 near Mile Marker 374 at around 9:22 p.m.
Texas DPS said Gonzales parked northbound on the shoulder of the roadway on Highway 87. Then a vehicle driven by a 41-year-old Jason Earnest Key, from Big Spring, crashed into the back of Gonzales’ parked car.
Emergency responders pronounced Gonzales dead at the scene.
When investigators arrived, they noticed Gonzales’s vehicle had rolled over. In addition, they also noticed Key has slurred speech and blood-shot eyes. He also had open alcoholic beverages in his car. Furthermore, he admitted to having had an alcoholic beverage on that day.
However, Key refused to do a standard field sobriety test. After receiving a search warrant, officers brought him to Scenic Mountain Medical Center to conduct a blood draw and the result said he was intoxicated.
