Texas Deputy John Coddou Dead while Helping People in Cypress Car Accident
CYPRESS, TX (May 1, 2024) — A Texas deputy, 50-year-old John H. Coddou, died in a car accident on Tuesday, April 23.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the crash took place on Highway 99 at Cumberland Ridge Drive at about 9:40 a.m.
Harris County Senior Deputy Thomas Gilliland said Coddou responded to a minor crash between two vehicles on Highway 99 in. He said Coddou parked his sheriff’s vehicle on the left side of the road behind the wrecked cars. After that, he turned on his interior emergency lights before he checked on those involved in the incident.
As he walked back to his vehicle, a 65-year-old man driving a Chevrolet Silverado 2500 struck Coddou. Then it stopped next to a cable barrier.
Coddou was unconscious at the scene and officials administered CPR on him. After that, they airlifted him to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, where medical personnel pronounced him dead.
The driver of the Chevrolet told authorities he was talking on his hands-free cellphone. then he noticed Coddou’s car and he did not have time to stop. Then he made a faulty evasive maneuver to the left into the grassy median resulting in the incident.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office handles the ongoing investigation of the crash.
