Jed Kelly Dead, Christopher Paulson Airlifted after Skamania County Plane Crash

SKAMANIA COUNTY, WA (September 24, 2024) — 45-year-old Jed Paul Kelly, of Eatonville, died in a plane crash on Friday, September 6.

According to the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office, the airplane went down in the area of Gifford Pinchot National Forest on Friday afternoon.

The plane, a 1943 Stearman Kaydet aircraft, was on the way to a fly-in event in Hood River. It departed from the Enumclaw area. Then it stopped at the South Lewis County airport. After that, the aircraft continued towards the Columbia River Gorge at noon.

However, the plane broke from a three-plane flying formation. Then the pilots of the other two planes reported it missing an hour and a half after they landed.

A rescue team arrived at the crash area based on coordinates they got from a transceiver from the downed plane.

When they arrived, they were able to make voice contact with the pilot, identified as 72-year-old Christopher M. Paulson, of Eatonville, Washington. Then they eventually located Paulson, and the crashed aircraft down a steep ravine.

The U.S. Coast Guard airlifted Paulson to a Portland hospital for treatment. Responders also found his passenger, Kelly, who died from his injuries.

The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office, Federal Aviation Administration, and National Transportation Safety Board handle the investigation of the crash.

Our heartfelt sympathies for the loved ones of Jed Kelly.
