Jaredi Mpaweingabire, Mapendo Olga, and Four Children Dead in Two-Vehicle Accident on Highway 87

 
HARTLEY COUNTY, TX (January 3, 2024)Jaredi Mpaweingabire and five others died in an accident on Wednesday, December 25.
 
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the incident happened at about 12:30 a.m. on Highway 87, about seven miles east of Hartley.
 
Texas DPS said a 2018 Honda Pilot towing a small trailer driven by 31-year-old Jaredi Mpaweingabire of Cactus, Texas, moved westbound on Highway 87. One of the passengers in the SUV was 28-year-old Mapendo Olga, of Cactus, Texas. Also in the SUV were a 6-year-old girl, a 5-year-old boy, a 4-year-old girl, and a 2-year-old boy.
 
DPS said that at the same time, 36-year-old Tyler Morales, of Amarillo, Texas, drove a box truck eastbound on Highway 87. Then for an unknown reason, the SUV went into the eastbound lane and the two vehicles crashed.
 
After impact, DPS said that the trailer detached from the SUV. After that, the SUV caught fire and became engulfed in flames.
 
Officials say all six people in the SUV sustained fatal injuries and died. Meanwhile, they transported Morales to a hospital with minor injuries.
 
Hartley Fire, EMS, Dalhart Volunteer Fire Department, and AMR Dalhart responded to the incident.
 
Texas DPS continues to investigate the accident.
