James Smith Dead, Holly Fifeld and Two Others Hurt in Head-On Crash

 
ARMSTRONG COUNTY, TX (January 27, 2025) — 40-year-old James Smith, of Amarillo, died in a head-on accident on Sunday, January 19.
 
The Texas Department of Public Safety said that the crash happened around 10:57 p.m. on Highway 207, approximately three miles north of Claude.
 
According to the Texas DPS, a southbound 2002 Acura RDX driven by Smith drifted across the center line into oncoming traffic. Then the Acura collided head-on with a northbound 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by 24-year-old driver Holly Fifeld from Borger.
 
Following the impact, the Acura skidded into the west ditch. At the same time, the Hyundai rolled multiple times and came to rest in the east ditch.
 
Authorities confirmed that the impact partially ejected Smith during the collision. He succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene.
 
Holly Fifeld suffered serious injuries and paramedics airlifted her to a nearby hospital for treatment. They also brought her passengers, 24-year-old Riley Fifeld and a baby girl, to area hospitals. Riley sustained minor injuries while the infant suffered serious injuries.
 
Texas DPS stated that road conditions were clear and dry when the accident happened.
 
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
