RED OAK, TX (August 24, 2023) — Two cousins, 15-year-old Emily Alaniz and 17-year-old Denise Gonzalez, died in a crash on Thursday, August 10.
 
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety officials, the crash happened on Pierce Road near Stagecoach Drive. At around 3:30 p.m., Alaniz and Gonzalez traveled in a 2006 Nissan Maxima to Red Oak High School to pick up one of their school schedules.
 
However, after a few hours, when the girls did not return home, their families started to worry. As they went looking for the cousins, they learned about the crash.
 
An investigation determined the vehicle traveled eastbound at an unsafe speed on the road. Then the driver lost control of the car and crashed into a metal pipe fence. Police believe both girls died on impact.
 
Officials said neither victim wore a seatbelt.
 
Police have not confirmed if speed or any other distractions contributed as a factor in the crash.
 
Loved ones set up a GoFundMe for both of the victims to help families cover the cost of the funerals and other expenses. As of writing, more than $7,000 has been raised, with a goal of $21,000.
