Cody Shelton Killed in Austin Hit-and-Run Accident, Tyrone Thompson Detained
AUSTIN, TX (March 21, 2024) — A Texan native identified as 26-year-old Cody Jordon Shelton died in a hit-and-run on Wednesday, March 13.
According to Austin Police, the incident involving a vehicle and two pedestrians took place at the intersection of East 7th Street and Red River Street at about 1:10 a.m.
An arrest affidavit said officers with APD tried to pull over a car driven by 23-year-old Tyrone Thompson for a faulty headlight. However, the vehicle did not stop.
Thompson then ran a red light. After that, he hit the two pedestrians in the crosswalk. Then he fled the scene and continued driving east on East 7th Street, police said.
One of the pedestrians was Shelton, who died on the scene.
Paramedics rushed the second pedestrian to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. As of Wednesday, the second person is still in the hospital in critical condition.
As the investigation continued Tuesday, investigators identified Thompson as the suspect in the crash after he was involved in another accident in Travis County. Police said they arrested him on unrelated charges at the time.
Officers then booked Thompson in the Travis County jail on several charges, including Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) and resisting arrest search or transport.
