Arturo Gonzalez, Anthony Hernandez, Mario De La Paz, and Teen Dead after Mesquite Car Accident

 
MESQUITE, TX (January 10, 2025) — 47-year-old Arturo Martinez Gonzalez and three others died in a car accident on Wednesday, January 1.
 
According to the Mesquite police, the accident occurred in the eastbound lanes in the 17100 block of 20 Freeway at around 1:45 a.m.
 
Responding officers determined that a vehicle with a flat tire pulled onto the outside shoulder of the highway. Four people stood outside the vehicle. Then another vehicle moving east drifted onto the shoulder. After that, it struck all four people and the disabled vehicle.
 
Authorities identified the four killed: 47-year-old Arturo Martinez Gonzalez, 19-year-old Anthony Hernandez, 19-year-old Mario Guajardo De La Paz, and a 15-year-old male. All of them were Terrell residents.
 
Hernandez’s sister, Nayeli Rodriguez, said the incident happened when her loved ones were driving back from a New Year’s Eve family reunion. She mentioned that Gonzales was her stepfather. In addition, she said De La Paz was her brother’s friend. The teen was De La Paz’s younger brother.
 
In the meantime, Rodriguez made a GoFundMe to help their family raise funds for two funerals.
 
Officials identified the driver of the second vehicle as 35-year-old Basilio Mares Ortiz, also of Terrell. They arrested him and he currently faces four counts of intoxication manslaughter charges.
