Arturo Castaneda Dies after Rollover Accident in San Patricio County
SAN PATRICIO COUNTY, TX (December 22, 2024) — 73-year-old Arturo Castaneda, of Skidmore, died in a rollover accident on Saturday, December 7.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the incident occurred at about 2:54 p.m. on the southbound 37 Freeway near mile marker 20A.
Troopers responded to the scene and found out that Castaneda drove the 2005 Jeep Liberty. The vehicle was occupied by his wife, 70-year-old Pabla Soto Castaneda, and their two great-grandchildren, ages 3 and 6.
Castaneda traveled south on 37 Freeway in the outside lane. Then he tried to change lanes but did not notice another vehicle in the lane next to him. He over-corrected and lost control of the vehicle.
As a result, the Liberty left the roadway and went across the access road. After that, it overturned several times and ejected the driver.
Responding officers pronounced Castaneda dead at the scene. Meanwhile, Pabla Castaneda sustained major injuries. Paramedics brought her by Halo Flight to Spohn Shoreline in Corpus Christi. She remains in critical condition.
Paramedics also brought the two to Driscoll Children’s Hospital with minor injuries.
Troopers from the Corpus Christi Highway Patrol Office continue to investigate the accident.
Our deepest sympathies to the loved ones of Arturo Castaneda.
