PHOENIX, AZ (December 29, 2024) — A 37-year-old man identified as Adam Bates died in a multi-vehicle accident on Thursday, December 19.
 
According to Phoenix police, 46-year-old Richard McKinney drove an SUV north on 43rd Avenue. Then he struck another vehicle traveling north near Northern Avenue at about 7:00 p.m.
 
After being hit, the vehicle spun into oncoming traffic. Then a third car going south hit the second vehicle.
 
Bates, who was the passenger in the vehicle that was hit, succumbed to sustained injuries and died at the scene.
 
Emergency responders brought three other adults and a girl in her late teens to the hospital with minor injuries.
 
Paramedics also brought McKinney to the hospital. After his medical release, officials later booked him into jail. He faces several charges, including manslaughter, aggravated assault, and endangerment.
