EL CAJON, CA (August 9, 2022) – A 20-year-old woman died following a hit-and-run on 8 Freeway from Second Street on Wednesday, July 27.

According to the El Cajon Police Department, they received a report around 8:49 p.m. that a car hit a pedestrian. The responding officers found the victim in the roadway near the on-ramp to Interstate 8 from Second Street.

While officials were on their way to the site of the reported accident, a concerned citizen called the El Cajon Communications Center after sighting a damaged vehicle at 1300 Naranca Avenue.

Responding officers went to the reported location and found a silver 2006 Hyundai Sonata, with its driver inside the vehicle. Officials said that the suspected vehicle had front damages and a traffic signal light hanging from it.

Investigations revealed that the driver of the Sonata heading northbound in the No. 3 lane of Second Street, jumped into the sidewalk in front of the victim, hitting her. Officials also revealed that the woman was standing on the sidewalk near the crosswalk in front of 601 North Second Street when she was struck.

The impact of the hit caused the victim to be knocked into the roadway. Then, the Sonata continued driving northbound, hit a traffic signal light and street sign, and turned east on Naranca Avenue. Then, the suspected vehicle eventually stopped in the middle of 1300 Naranca Avenue.

Police took the driver into San Diego County Jail with multiple charges. Officials stated that the driver was possibly under the influence when the fatal accident happened.
