MISSION, TX (January 15, 2025) — A 14-year-old girl, Ashley Monserrat Pano Fuentes, lost her life in a wrong-way accident on New Year’s Day.
 
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the incident happened at about 1:22 a.m. near FM 492 and 6 Mile Road in Mission.
 
Texas DPS said 23-year-old Jose Cordero drove a Chevrolet Camaro northbound in the southbound lane at a high rate of speed. Then, his vehicle collided with a Toyota Sequoia carrying a family of four.
 
The impact ejected Fuentes from the Sequoia. She suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
 
Meanwhile, emergency responders transported Cordero and his passenger to a hospital. They have since been released.
 
Fuentes’ mother received treatment for minor injuries and was later released from the hospital. Her two sisters remain hospitalized in stable condition.
 
Loved ones made a GoFundMe to help the Fuentes family with the funeral costs and medical expenses.
 
Authorities arrested Cordero after his release from the hospital. He faces charges including intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault. Authorities currently hold him in Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center with a $170,000 bond.
 
DPS Troopers continue to investigate the fatal crash.
