SANTA YNEZ VALLEY, CA (October 13, 2022) — 40-year-old Joseph Anthony Nunez died while three other people got sent to a hospital following a head-on crash on Highway 154 on Sunday morning, October 9.

The fatal collision occurred near Meadowvale Road at around 10:30 a.m., according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

Authorities said Nunez, heading eastbound in his 2013 Ford C-Max, tried to avoid hitting a slowing vehicle in front when it hit the rear of the westbound 2020 BMW X5. The BMW X5 caused to overturn where it continued eastbound on the westbound lane and struck a 2008 Toyota Highlander.

Steven Mon, the driver of the Highlander, and his passenger suffered moderate injuries. Medical personnel sent them to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. Katha Penny, the driver of the Toyota Highlander, suffered minor injuries, but was not transported to the hospital.

Meanwhile, three occupants of another vehicle suffered life-threatening injuries, which required hospital treatment.

The California Highway Patrol closed off both directions of 154 between Edison Street and Highway 246 for several hours before reopening all lanes later in the day.

The details leading up to the incident remain unknown at this time. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
