Dennis Byrd Dies after Hit by Car in Bakersfield
BAKERSFIELD, CA (January 10, 2022) — Dennis Eric Byrd died after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 178 on Tuesday night, January 3.
The fatal collision occurred east of Niles Street before 6:00 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. Authorities said a 2019 Mercedes A220, driven by 33-year-old Jajayra Sillas, headed west on Highway 178 at a speed of 60 miles per hour.
For unknown reasons, 30-year-old Byrd walked across the lanes of the highway at the same time the Mercedes-Benz approached.
Byrd was hit and died at the scene.
33-year-old Sillas stayed at the scene and cooperated with police.
No additional information is available at this time. The cause and factors behind the incident remain under investigation.
